(Not So) Old Kentucky Home
Scottwood Bed & Breakfast, Midway, Ky.
Betsa Marsh With dramatic
pines sheltering its wings and the South Elkhorn Creek bubbling
behind, it looks as if this venerable Kentucky farmhouse has
been tucked into its cove off Leestown Road since the
commonwealth began.
Yet the house and setting have
coalesced only since 1971, when the 18th-century structure was
moved from Ironworks Pike in Scott County and resettled outside
Midway in Woodford County. So it was natural that the home's new
name would become an amalgam of the two: Scottwood.
Couples, too, like to spend time
beneath this stately roof, first put on by abolitionist Simeon
True in 1795. Some choose the elegant Williamsburg room -
Kentucky was once, after all, Virginia's largest county –– near
the home's keeping room, full of presidential memorabilia.
Other couples book the entire
upstairs Shaker Suite, with antique quilts, rockers and a
personal sitting room. It's homage to the Shaker heritage of the
region, highlighted at Harrodsburg's Shaker Village at Pleasant
Hill.
For maximum privacy, check in to
the Carriage House, a separate retreat with a four-poster bed,
working fireplace, kitchenette and private deck. Innkeepers
Annette and Tim Grahl will even deliver your breakfast ––
cherry-stuffed French toast, anyone? –– to the vine-draped
bungalow.
Since Scottwood is surrounded by
multimillion-dollar thoroughbred farms, the Carriage House is
given over to the Bluegrass obsession with horses. Magazine
racks and bathroom towel racks are welded out of horseshoes, and
a plaque on the mantel says it all: "It's a horses (sic) world,
ADJUST."
Beyond the horse farms, travelers
enjoy the antique shops, such as Irish Acres Gallery of Antiques
in Nonesuch. Woodford Reserve distillery lures visitors with
tours and testing.
Adventurous B&Bers can canoe
between Scottwood and Equus Run Winery, to picnic and enjoy one
of the summertime Concerts in the Vineyard. Just be sure to have
a designated paddler for the voyage home.
